However in the short story fear is only present at the end when Mr.Mead is arrested by the patrol. This leaves the viewer aware that something bad is about to happen.

In the movie since Bob is an average citizen going outside for the first time, we are able to see fear and tension since the moment Bob is getting ready for his first exhibition, as he knows what he is doing is horribly wrong. Talking about atmosphere, the technological control, being so strict sets a scary and stressful atmosphere in the story, in the film fear is seen throughout the whole story, while in the short story fear is only seen at the end. This made the city appear “dead”, and as Bradbury said like a graveyard. Which showed how the natural world is banished and distrusted. This established a dark, lonely, and abandoned atmosphere which gave the viewer the impression that with everybody now at home watching TV, they see no matter in coming out and there isn’t any human interaction. They both took place in a futuristic dystopian society which was completely ruled and controlled by technology, and the story was set in an autumn night. Now setting, the setting for the story and the movie was very similar. These are all characteristics that Mr.Mead had, and through his perspective helped the audience understand. The dystopian protagonist often feels trapped and is struggling to escape, he is the only one who sees something wrong with the society he is living in and is usually willing to do something against it.

This was better because it allowed the audience to compare Mr.Mead with Bob, and understand the difference between an average citizen, and the dystopian protagonist. On the other hand in the movie a new character named Bob is introduced, unlike Leonard he is an average citizen and going outside scared him at first. Mead being the only character we ever meet, doesn’t let the reader understand how different he actually is from any other citizen in the society. Which is why he has been taking walks outside at noon for years, to actually take time and appreciate his surroundings. He is a writer, who is different from his society because unlike everyone else he doesn’t let technology lead and control his life. Even Though their are some minor similarities between the book and the movie, the differences concerning characters, setting, and plot are remarkable.įirst, in terms of characters Leonard Mead is the protagonist who is present in both the story and the film. In both the film and the movie, the protagonist is Leonard Mead who feels trapped in his society which has stopped using human interaction now that their world fully depends on technology. Have you ever watched a movie about a story you first thought would be very similar, but later realized the message being transmitted wasn’t the same anymore? This is exactly what the amazing Author Ray Bradbury did in the short story The Pedestrian, when he came out with a movie version.
